✅ What is a JA Career Day?
A JA Career Day is an event where students learn about a range of career options across multiple career clusters from community volunteer speakers. The intentions of a JA Career Day are to inspire, inform, and prepare students for their future by giving them realistic, hands-on insights into the professional world, while fostering connections between education and career pathways.
✅ What Do Volunteers Do?
Volunteers present the same 20-30 minute presentation to 3-4 different groups of students throughout the event. Group sizes will range between 15 to 30 students per session. A teacher will be available in the classroom for help during your 20-30 minute sessions. We encourage speakers to speak on what they feel might be most beneficial to learn about their profession. There is no right or wrong presentation! This could be about a non-traditional route they've taken, what their day to day looks like, college experience and/or different roles they've been in. Presentations can include a slideshow or videos but are not required.
✅ What Is the Role of the Teacher?
During the event, teachers are present in the classroom at all times to help maintain classroom expectations and management. They are also there to assist volunteers in passing items out, and answer any of the volunteer questions.
✅ What Is JA Staff's Role?
JA staff works with the partner school to plan the event, recruit volunteers, field volunteer questions leading up to the event and handles all communication between the school and volunteer.
✅ What Is My Time Commitment?
Usually 2.5-3 hours. Career Days are normally held in the morning but do vary depending on the partner school's need. Volunteers arrive at the school between 7:30-9:00 AM, about 15-30 minutes prior to their first session. Typically, volunteers are done between 10:00-11:30 AM.
✅ What should my presentation include?
- Introductions • Field/Career that you are in • What other types of careers are available in your field? • What do you do? • What type of education do you need to get into your position? • What do you like about your career? • What challenges do you face? • What are the opportunities for advancement? • Outlook for career?
✅ Do you have any tips for me?
- Engage and interact with the students. Bring along items to show the students what you do. • Tell an interesting story about your career. • Bring an item for kids to take home to promote your business • Play a game which helps them understand your career.
